The Difference Between Regular and Travel CPAP Devices

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects the way you breathe. In other words, this is a disorder in which the breathing stops and starts at certain intervals, and it can pose real danger to the health. The most common treatment for this disorder is with the help of CPAP therapy which uses a special machine known as CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure).

Well, CPAP devices are efficient devices designed to treat this disorder. They use mild air pressure created to keep breathing airways open all the time while sleeping. CPAP devices are used for treating obstructive and central sleep apnea because both of these disorders lead to interrupted breathing when sleeping. Because of this, the brain doesn’t get enough oxygen and people with it are at higher risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, heart disease and many other health concerns.

This machine is among the most commonly used ones because of its efficiency. An important thing you should know about it is that it is a bit bulkier and needs to be placed on a nightstand or a side table next to your bed. Depending on your condition, you can use either a nasal mask, nasal pillow mask or a full mask. While the nasal and nasal pillow masks are designed to cover only the nasal area, this full mask is designed to cover both the nose and mouth. This mask is perfect for those people who breathe through their mouth when sleeping.

What Is a Travel CPAP Machine?

As the name suggests, travel CPAP machines are used when travelling which explains their smaller size. They are perfect for those of you who travel frequently because of their size and easy portability. They are extremely light and small in size, perfect for being carried in a handbag or backpack. Usually, these machines offer waterless humidification and work on batteries which makes them extremely easy to use. Plus, they do not produce a lot of noise which makes them perfect for being used even during your flights.

Can You Use a Travel CPAP Daily?

These CPAP devices can be used on a daily basis for sure, however, it seems that you cannot use them instead of your regular prescribed machine for a longer period of time. Instead, it is recommended to use them only those times when travelling and when you can’t carry your bulkier machine. This little helper should help you stay on therapy on the go, however, it isn’t recommended for continuous use if you already have a prescribed one.

Why Aren’t Travel Apnea Machines Suitable for Continuous Use?

The main and most important reason for not using these machines is that they won’t provide you with the needed treatment prescribed by your doctor. This means that while using them short-term you might feel better and more refreshed in the morning, using them in the long run you won’t be able to obtain the needed benefits. But, what exactly are their limitations and downsides?!

Limitation in Humidification

The first and most important thing you should know about the mini versions of this machine is that most of them have no heated humidifier. Even if using one that has an HME (heat moisture exchanger), it still won’t provide you with the needed humidification. So, this is the main reason why the mini models aren’t suitable for daily use in the long run.

Mask Options

While some models of mini devices can fit the standard CPAP masks with a standard 22 mm connector, most of them need the use of special masks. The good news is that most of these mini devices come equipped with masks and tubing, so you won’t have to worry about anything. Plus, these masks are smaller in size than the standard masks which also happen to be bulkier.

Compliance Reporting

Given the fact that these machines are directly connected with your doctor for him to be able to see the results, this means that you should certainly choose a mask that can give the same report. Most of these machines require app download, while some of them have Bluetooth uploading which is way easier and faster. Of course, some models have any of these options which makes them cheaper, however, if your machine should allow free access to your CPAP provider, then you should certainly invest in such a model.

These lightweight, simple, and easy-to-carry machines are the best option when travelling, however, you really shouldn’t rely on them when dealing with sleep apnea that has been diagnosed by a physician. That way you’ll put everything at risk and you won’t feel any effect and benefits from using it. So, it is always better to have both regular CPAP and travel CPAP to reap the benefits of your CPAP treatment.
